Kiwi, also known as kiwifruit, is primarily grown in temperate regions across the world. The largest producer is China, where provinces like Shaanxi and Sichuan dominate cultivation due to their favorable climate and fertile soils. New Zealand is equally famous for kiwi farming, particularly in the Bay of Plenty region, where the fruit has become a national export symbol. Italy and Greece are leading producers in Europe, supplying much of the continent’s demand. In the Southern Hemisphere, Chile plays a vital role in off-season production, ensuring year-round availability in global markets. Smaller but notable cultivation also occurs in California, USA, and parts of Spain, making kiwi a truly international crop. These regions share common climatic conditions—cool winters, frost-free springs, and moderate rainfall—that allow kiwi vines to thrive and produce high-quality fruit for both domestic consumption and export.

Kiwi cultivation depends heavily on specific climate and soil conditions. The fruit thrives in temperate climates with distinct seasonal changes, requiring 400–700 hours of winter chilling below 7°C to ensure proper bud development. However, kiwi vines are sensitive to frost, making frost-free springs essential for healthy flowering and fruit set. Soil plays a crucial role too—kiwi prefers well-drained, fertile soils with a slightly acidic pH between 5.5 and 7.0. Adequate irrigation is necessary, as the vines have high water demands during the growing season. Regions with consistent rainfall or access to irrigation systems are ideal for commercial cultivation. Farmers often use trellis systems to support the vigorous vines, ensuring proper sunlight exposure and air circulation. These environmental requirements explain why kiwi is concentrated in select regions worldwide, where natural conditions align perfectly with the plant’s growth needs.

Different regions specialize in distinct kiwi varieties, contributing to the fruit’s global diversity. The most widely grown variety is the Hayward kiwi, known for its green flesh, tangy flavor, and long shelf life, making it ideal for export. New Zealand has pioneered the development of the SunGold kiwi, a golden-fleshed variety that is sweeter and less acidic, gaining immense popularity in international markets. Italy and Greece primarily cultivate green kiwi varieties, while Chile focuses on supplying both green and golden kiwis during the off-season for Northern Hemisphere markets. In California, farmers grow smaller quantities of Hayward kiwi, catering to domestic demand. These regional differences not only diversify consumer choices but also strengthen global trade networks. The branding efforts, particularly by New Zealand’s Zespri, have elevated kiwi from a niche fruit to a globally recognized superfood.

Kiwi cultivation is not just an agricultural activity but a major contributor to international trade. China, despite being the largest producer, consumes most of its kiwi domestically, while New Zealand dominates global exports through strong branding and quality assurance. The Zespri cooperative has successfully marketed kiwi as a premium fruit, expanding its reach across Asia, Europe, and North America. Italy and Greece serve as Europe’s primary suppliers, while Chile ensures year-round availability by exporting during the Northern Hemisphere’s off-season. Kiwi’s reputation as a superfood rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and dietary fiber has boosted demand worldwide, making it a staple in health-conscious diets. This rising demand has encouraged farmers in new regions, including parts of India, to experiment with kiwi cultivation, aiming to tap into both domestic and export markets. The fruit’s commercial success highlights its global agricultural significance.
